Review

High School DxD is a light novel by Ichiei Ishibumi. DxD is yet another example of a tropish novel done right. The story itself is divided into two perspectives. One one had, you have your wish-fulfullment main character. He is always up to his pervy antics, endlessly pursuing his sexual urges, while he has his group of perv friends that he hangs around with. he's weak, and has few initial features, but ends up getting lucky break one after another, and gets acquianted with one beautiful girl after another. However, the tropes end there, while DxD takes it much farther. The girls have distinct and developed personalities. We come to knwo them as human beings because of the flawed but human choices which they have to make, and the entire cast grows on you as the story goes by. Issue, who normally would be ignored, gets actual development. Usually, these types of protags are left as empty slates so the viewer (Mainly males) can put themselves in his position. However, Issei quickly becomes human like the rest, and he gets serious development as he questions himself, and matures through adversity. The other side to the story is set in a massive world filled to the brim with every mythology you can think of, all on the brink of another devastating super-war that would inevitably lead to the annihilation of everything. However, the powers-that-be have wised up a bit since last time and are trying to keep things from boiling over. For once it actually works, and a tentative alliance between the three Christianity based factions (Angels, Demons, and Fallen Angels) is born. And then immediately put under siege by dissenters who very much want to do the whole "everybody dies" thing. Thus the crux of the plot is born. We have a modern take on a mythological world, while framed in the perspective of a normal teen turned devil, surrounded by his stellar cast. One stand-out part of the series is that there is actual romance in the novel, and unlike many other similar types, there is no stupid block that prevents a closure between two characters. Still, I can feel the editor lurking in the background and making sure nothing happens. I just want my Rias and Issei together already... The action is incredible and exhilarating and the story progresses at a comfortable pace. DxD is a good novel indeed.
